SpotLight: Illuminating Engineering — Showcasing Hydrogen Aviation Research
We’re pleased to share that two members of the Making Hydrogen Work in Zero Carbon Jet Engines programme will be presenting on the 29th April 2026 at SpotLight: Illuminating Engineering, a public event organised by the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford, that brings engineering research to a wider audience.
Ashley van Bruygom and Adelaida Jimenez-Villarejo Diaz will represent the programme grant, offering insight into one of the most complex challenges in sustainable aviation: enabling hydrogen-powered jet engines.
Their talk: Flying into the future: can hydrogen get us there? will explore the multifaceted nature of hydrogen propulsion, from fundamental engineering constraints to system-level integration. Hydrogen offers a compelling pathway to zero-carbon flight, but realising this potential requires addressing a web of interconnected challenges — spanning combustion, materials, storage, safety, and infrastructure.
This is an exciting opportunity to showcase not just progress, but the depth and breadth of engineering thinking required to make hydrogen flight viable. Ashley, a University Research Fellow based at Loughborough University, shared her excitement about her involvement in the event, "I'm looking forward to coming to Oxford to show the power of collaboration that is integral to this type of programme grant. A key factor in the success of implementing a new technology, like hydrogen fuelled aircraft, is ensuring that the public are involved and buying into it in its infancy, and this sort of event is a great way to showcase the process!"
