Transpiration Cooling of Hypersonic Vehicles

OTI’s Hassan Saad Ifti presented his paper on “flow characterisation of porous UHTCs (Ultra-High-Temperature-Ceramics) for transpiration cooling of hypersonic vehicles” at the ’22nd AIAA International Space Planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference’ within the AIAA SPACE Forum 2018.

This innovative work is the first of its kind. Hassan highlighted work on permeability measurements of UHTC samples, hot-wire velocity maps and focused Schlieren of the outflow. The discussion following the talk was full of energy and there was much interest in the work. A particular highlight was getting to meet Buzz Aldrin; we all agree that Hassan had an unforgettable five days at AIAA SPACE 2018!
